Brewski's Smokey Joe's Cafe-- where the Blue Gator used to be on Sixth
Eagle Diner-- the old Kettle building-- looks done on a shoestring
Tsunami Japanese Steakhouse-- in an old T'nT building by the VA hospital
Yogis BBQ Fish and Wings-- In the drive up at Bushland and Western
Frankie's Diner-- on Sixth, don't know if new but it cracks me up how they just pasted "Diner" over "pizza"
Anyone been to any of these?

Made my way to the Eagle Diner last night. You have it pegged. Same people who had the Eagle Diner in Canyon. Likely the same menu, was only there once some time back. Is a scaled down Denny's / IHOP menu (way down) where they only serve breakfast till 11:00.
Food was, at the risk of sounding somewhat snobbish, small town imitation Dairy Queenish.
They have applied for an alcohol licenses. May be the only thing that could save them from going down fast.
If they are reading this, please serve breakfast later, at least on weekends. That might be the only thing to get me back.

We went to Smokey Joe's on 6th St. last night. This week's menu was hand written on notebook paper and photocopied. All they have right now is a hamburger with your choice of several add-on's, but they said they will be adding more items soon.
If all you want is a burger with fries and a beer (or tea) it's not bad.

Just got word Benigan's is closed down as of today? What is up with that part of town you would think the Western Crossings new stuff would help that area.

I ate bbq from Yogi's yesterday. I got the 14.00 sampler-- everything was good. They are my favorite ribs in town now, meaty, tender, and with a great crust. The bbq chicken was good, but I never order it anyplace else, so I can't say if any place does it better. The brisket was chopped istead of sliced, which I would have prefered, but it was still tasty. The sausage was good, but not noteworthy. The smoker was going when I got there, and the parking lot smelled delicious. The smoker has a license plate from Illinois, so I asked if they were from Chicago. The lady is from 3 hours south of there.
Also got the hot wings, which were good, and seemed homemade. Though, they were a little soggy by the time I got them home. I'll open the styrofoam box next time for the drive.

Heard a lengthy discussion about Bennigan's on a nation talk program on the drive from Abilene to Lubbock late Sunday afternoon. They said they over expanded the chain locations by about twice as much as the growth of the industry. One thing that caught my attention is the only locations closed were corporate owned. Independent local franchises remain open on a case by case basis.

This may be about the same level of place as what has gone in the old Chinese Kitchen spot at 34th and Bell...just west of The Plaza. Driving by a couple of nights ago... I think the small lettering on the sign said Landsharks for the name? I couldn't believe 2 of the signs that said now open...because they look like children made them. I hope they don't have more than like a 3 month lease...because the signs indicate a low-budget place. That spot has been closed as a restaurant now for several years. |

Ok....Landsharks now has a real lighted sign up...but their temporary paper signs were small and horrible. Also...a pet peeve about signs... For a new local restaurant... They should have small lettering under or beside the big sign...indicating what sort of food they offer. Because I don't know what the heck sort of restaurant this is.  If you want to be successful...and have new drive-by customers coming in... You've got to give people some clue about what sort of food you have on your menu. So many new local businesses in Amarillo...have no real clue about marketing.  |

Potential new customers should not have to guess what the specialty is.
All it takes is putting the words Family Dining or Seafood or Steaks...next to the big sign with the name.
Hopefully they just haven't gotten that done yet.
If you want to maximize the income from a new business...
a name and/or sign indicating what you offer...is very important.
