Billboard on the right...as you're driving south on Western...almost to 34th.... Says Fly Standby With The Symphony....get last minute tickets. What a dumb thing...and a horrible way to plan an evening. The symphony is something people dress up for... So are you just supposed to show up...and wait in the lobby...and hope and pray you can get tickets??? If you get dressed up...and show up...and can't get in....then your evening plans are screwed. I guess you can go home...and change back into real clothes...and then go somewhere else. How dumb can you get. None of this crap would even be necessary if the symphony had stayed in the Civic Center auditorium... which is over twice size of that ugly little Globe News place...that the taxpayers had to bail out for over a million dollars. Glad I'm not the symphony type. Hope you're reading this from somewhere Frisbeedawg...because you supported this Globe News crap. This is just as dumb as the folks who are trying to get WTAMU to move to a smaller football stadium.

If you go to Barnes & Noble...and look at Accident West magazine...
They always have pictures of people mingling at the symphony.
And I see folks dressed like they are going to church or a wedding or funeral.
Sure makes it look like the symphony is a pretty formal affair...if you could even get in the door.
I'm not saying I wouldn't enjoy the symphony....but I'm not quite sure I fit in with that group.
The pictures I've seen....make that crowd look sorta prissy and pompous.
I think a rock concert might be more to my liking. ;D

On radio...they're advertising Trans-Siberian Orchestra in Lubbock on Dec.30...at United Spirit.
That's really good stuff...and I just may have to go to Target to get the CD they're talking about.

The only thing wrong with rock concerts in Amarillo is if they are at the Civic Center, you can;t drink! So you have to go and get a buzz before you go! Unless you can sneal a pint in there....Not that I have ever tried it! ;D

West-Texan: Hey, at least you noticed the billboard. I'm glad to hear that.
I hope I can answer some of your concerns about the Standby program. Yes, it's available for very last-minute purchases -- and we've been able to meet all of those requests. But you can also call about two weeks before any concert to get your name on the list. As soon as tickets are released by patrons who, for one reason or another, are unable to attend the concert, we'll give you a call and sell you the ticket right then.
Our thought was that this would be a cheap and easy way for anyone to try out the Symphony and see what they think. We've been lucky to have four sold-out seasons in a row, and this program allows us to get in anyone else who wants to check us out.
And anyone and everyone is certainly welcome to do that. Rena's right: There's absolutely no dress code at our concerts. People come in whatever they feel comfortable in -- whether it's suits & ties, dresses & heels, or boots & jeans. The photos you've seen in Accent West are most likely from special events, which isn't always representative of our regular concerts.
If you ever want to give us a try, just give me (Chip Chandler) a call at the office. I'll put you on the Standby list myself.

I keep reading around this...and just now read all of this...
Thanks for responding to this...
I'll keep that in mind...
But we still have the fact...
That this situation would not be happening at all if the symphony still performed at the Civic Center.
Are we attracting anything at the new smaller building...
That we couldn't get at the larger CC auditorium?
Since the city had to bail-out the new building...no one has ever really gone over the benefits of the new smaller building versus the much larger Civic Center auditorium.
Can you please enlighten us on this?

The Symphony is definitely attracting artists who are excited about performing in the Globe-News Center. It's not just a line -- the acoustics in that building are phenomenal. Other acts have come into the building specifically because of its acoustics and its size (for example, Trisha Yearwood and Usher recorded a show for CMT, I believe). I can sit anywhere in the hall and hear a richer sound than I can in the Civic Center Auditorium. There are good spots in the auditorium, especially in the back. But when you sit up there, you can feel removed from the concert. That's not true in the GNC.
The intimacy of a performance in that hall is something that can never be replicated in the Civic Center Auditorium. Bigger is not always better, particularly when it comes to a performance space.
Our city's reputation is increased across the country by the fact that we have a world-class performing arts center. It has attracted and will continue to attract new residents and new businesses.
I know I'm biased here, but I'd be saying this if I didn't work for one of the resident companies.

I know they've come out with better techniques in the last 35 or 40 years...but I wonder if acoustic modifications could have been made at the CC auditorium.
The larger size makes it useful for things other than the symphony...
>>> So I certainly hope they don't let the auditorium deteriorate just across the street.
And we still lose out to Lubbock on getting some events because of venue size.
And that needs to be addressed for Amarillo to not be left behind.
