I feel sorry for th Randall kids, I know it was a decision he made based on what he wnats..and thats what he was supposed to do, but those kids at Randall were pretty upset today according to my daughter. She said they (football players) were mad because he did not tell them or give them a heads up..They heard about it this a.m on the news...

And where has the Tascosa coach gone?

Take a wild guess where the Tascosa coach went.
Back to Pampa?? oh good guess.
This place amazes me. The football coach turns in resignation. They get over half dozen apps for the job. Do we even interview or look into any of the applicants?
Nope, we call up the guy that walked out after using our program to springboard himself into another job and just say hey HP you want the job? It is yours if you just show up. So, probably seeing the writing on the wall at Tascosa he takes the job. Case closed.
The good old buddy buddy network churns on.

With all the stuff we hear on the internet about school and parent politics at Pampa...
I wasn't a bit surprised when Parker escaped to Tascosa...
But if what they say about Pampa is true...I'm surprised he'd want to go back.
But since Parker is a younger guy...I wouldn't count on him staying forever at Pampa.
And what happened to the coach who just left at Pampa?

He is not going to be AD. Smith will keep that.
As far as pay goes - they decided on a "range". The exact amount will not be set until after the state settles on how much the ISD is going to get. He gets $342 (if I remember correctly) per day for the remainder of this year.
When he left here he was getting 43K and jumped to something in the 80K+ range at Tascosa. I can not fathom them paying him any where near that amount - but who knows what will happen around here.

He left Tascosa in the 90+ range. I doubt he will make that at Pampa. Some of the scuttlebutt I have heard one of the big reasons was Pampa will drop to 3A thus making it a strong statewide contender.
I don't know if Tascosa has the talent or numbers to be competitive in the District they are in now regardless of who is coaching. The Permian Basin schools are just too large to compete with year in and year out.
There is some talk, the ASID folks are hoping AHS and THS drop to 4A.

If he was only making 43K at Pampa before...that isn't much for a family to live on.
Unless the wife also has a good job making that much or more.
Years ago when I was in HS...our town lost 3 assistant coaches to private business.
They took white collar jobs in oil and gas...and 2 of them stayed with Diamond Shamrock until retirement.

Assuming a 12 month contract at 52 weeks, this would be a bottom line pay of $88,920.00 per year. Surely there is some car expense to go with that. Now, what does the AD make?

Ah, the life of a high school coach. Their success depends upon 15, 16, 17 year old kids "buying in" to their program and "committing" to the team. They emphasize these points over and over and then jump to a better job at the drop of a hat. Not that I blame them - almost anyone would move to a higher paying job if they had the opportunity to do so. It just seems a bit disingenuous.
If you are participating in high school athletics or your child is participating in high school atheltics just remember that the coaches, no matter what they say, are in it for themselves.
Also rememember that high school athletics ARE NOT THAT IMPORTANT. The day after graduation, high school athletics drops to zero on life's importance scale.

I hear some rumors around town that the numbers you calculate SJ are not that far off. I really have a hard time believing it, but stranger things have definitely happened around here.
They were only paying him 43K when he left - hard to imagine doubling that amount in just 4 years time, but...... who knows. I know that this district is one of the lowest paying for teachers - if they jump up and pay him that range to come back - that ought to raise a stink.
You know the old adage - you get what you pay for. We usually pay minimum wage so we get minimum wage coaching.
I am going to be shocked if the rumors turn out to come true, but will post it here when I hear anything definite.

As far as teaching/coaching as a lucrative paying position. It is not. It is a great occupation for a second income - but if it is the main source for a family - it would definitely require 2 incomes to provide a good lifestyle for a family.
For Parker to jump when he did (or Plunk) - I dont blame them a bit. Parker doubled his pay. A man can not be expected to turn that down. I just dont like a lot of the comments he made and sounds like Plunk made and then taking that step.
That is why I left this profession nearly 25 years ago and went to the private business sector. I provided my family with a much better lifestyle and set myself up with a pretty decent retirement that I am looking at cashing in on next year. I do miss the coaching, but it was strictly a monetary decision.
Now that money is not an issue, I have looked into going back to it for a few years.

Banneddad, I have heard Pampa is dangerously close to be reclassified into 3A. This would make Pampa an extremely competive 3A team in football. Could this plus pay been a contributor to the decision?

Sorry about the long delay gettin back - been on a project that has pretty well consumed my time. Seems every time reclassification comes up - we are just barely over the number to stay 4A.
With the sudden dump in the oilfield the last year and the shutting down of the Celanese plant, I think that dropping to 3A could be a very disctinct possibility this next time.
I am not sure even then that I could see Pampa as a strong contendor in 3A. The whole system has gone down too far and would take some major revamping to get back to being a contendor in any sport with the exception of softball.
The last few years worth of coaching turmoil and lack of leadership has drastically degraded the programs here and it is going to take time time to rebuild them.
On a positive note for Pampa - I heard last week that the baseball coach is leaving. As long as they dont do something really stupid (like fill it in house), that can be nothing but a step up.
