We were visiting my wife's oldest daughter's place down in the Houston area. She's had to get a water moccasin out of her living room before. We were talking and having coffee as it was getting dark when I saw a bug crawling across the patio. I didn't think anything of it, but her dog wanted to eat it and before the dog could get close enough she jumped up and said d**ned scorpions! and smashed it with her shoe.
Thankfully it gets cold enough here to keep the creepy crawly things down, but I do realize the importance of snakes in the food chain and never kill them. I credit Steve Irwin the crocodile hunter for his contribution to human's knowledge of reptiles.
