18-year-old escapes from Santa Fe building

A man wanted on two misdemeanor warrants made a short-lived escape from the Santa Fe Building on Thursday morning.
The handcuffed 18-year-old escaped about 10 a.m. after a scuffle with a Potter County deputy on the first-floor lobby area during which the prisoner managed to free one wrist and run out the front door, Potter sheriff's public information officer Capt. Greg Daniel said Thursday.
An off-duty corrections officer from the Neal Unit joined the deputy in foot pursuit and captured the fleeing man minutes later at the intersection of Eighth Avenue and Tyler Street after the escapee got into his girlfriend's vehicle, Daniel said.
The incident began after the man had been arraigned in court on two misdemeanor charges and then was served by investigators with the Potter County Attorney's Office with two misdemeanor bond surrender warrants, Daniel said.
He was escorted to the first-floor security room to be booked on the two outstanding warrants and was waiting in handcuffs for the deputy to complete booking paperwork when he bolted, Daniel said.
Deputies transported the man to the Potter County Detention Center where he awaited arraignment Thursday evening on the warrants and charges of escape from custody and evading arrest.
