Todays paper talked about gallbladder surgery being performed via laproscope. Calling it a 'new' easier type of surgery.

I don't have any, but, guess it's better then a really big city or at least it would be for me. I wouldn't want to live in New York, Chicago, California, etc. To many people, to much traffic, major highways I don't want anything to do with. I like a quiet sedate life enough will catch up with you as is without adding more problems along the way. LOL

I'm Baptist. You probably don't know what different religions are over here. We got a bunch. LOL From what I read from my history books I believe the main religion of Russia is Greek Orthodox ?

I heard there are tons of different religions in the U.S., but maybe not that many in Amarillo and Baptism looks the broadest one in there (in the city), no?

To be honest, there's not as many religion streams in Russia as in the United States, but it still has ones. I can't say Orthodoxy is some main religion over here, because Russia position itself like multi-cultural and multi-confession country and the biggest religions here are Orthodoxy, Islam and Buddhism as in the rest of the world anyway. I'm not sure what branch of Islam is presented in Bashkortostan the most: sunni or shiits, because I'm not good at such things, but Islam and Orthodoxy is the biggest ones in my city at least. You also can find Mormons here ^_^

If I had to guess I'd say the majority of folks around here are Baptist. You got General Baptist, Southern Baptists, etc.

Really? Mormons? must not be like the ones we have over here in Utah, etc. That's surprising to me.

There are 350 curches in Amarillo, a town with a population of about 200,000 and that is a lot. What that should tell you is that people can't get along very well in churches and their congregations become fractured. Amarillo is in the bible belt and is an extremely devout church going town.

I've seen the Amish up close in southern Tennessee.

And some Mennonites in western Oklahoma.

The Amish guys knew my cousin's father-in-law well enough to joke with him and give him a hard time. ;D

Their missionaries come mostly from Utah and California. I tried to converse with them to practice my English, but you know it's not that interesting, because they didn't go with me when I invited them somewhere and so on.

I've been looking for a forum like this one for a long time, because a little city forum is better than any social network like facebook. In my city we have a little, but extremely popular forum where you can find some city news even before they are published on TV or newspapers. We make news ourselves. So I was interested to find something like that in Amarillo. You know, sedateness and calmness work not only for way to live, but for the place in the Internet to spend time on. Social Networks are crazy, but this forum is nice

You may ask why Amarillo? Just I have a penpal from Amarillo and I was interested if it's possible to learn something from the forum to better understand the penpal. I find this forum isn't that active like it was before, concluding from the topics, but it's still nice because I can ask questions here and get answers

Just wondered since Amarillo is not a major city like Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York.
I need to learn Spanish. Husband bought some CD's thru the mail for us to learn together. My hats off to you trying to read and write English. I could never learn Russian. Words are to long!

Yeah, most talk forums are not as busy as they used to be.
I'm glad I found this one when we got ready to move from Indiana to the Amarillo area. I always found if you want to learn more about a city go to their newspaper site and see if they have a blog. We bought land couple of yrs. before we actually gave the orders to build a house on that land because we got a good deal on it. We actually started coming down here 5 yrs. before we made the move. To get a feel of the area. Some different from what I'm used to, but, I'm coming around to it. April of 2012 I'd been here 2 yrs. not getting lost like I did last yr. !
LOL I miss my strawberries from Indiana, best what is, and the tomatoes too, but, then you got better fruit all yr. down here.

I like Spanish. Never tried to learn it though. In my opinion, one of the main things about learning a foreign language is learning it with someone, not alone. So you made a good choice to learn Spanish together. I guess you have a lot of opportunities to hear and use Spanish in Amarillo, but is it kinda vital to know Spanish over there or it'd be just some plus or it's not of any crucial use?

I live in Bashkortostan and one of the official languages here is Bashkir, but I don't speak it and that's not a problem for a comfortable living in here.

By the way about city forums, I know one interesting website. Next time you move somewhere, you won't need to find a newspaper site www.city-data.com/ There are tons of information about different cities. But since Amarillo really isn't a major one, there's just few threads about it.

I heard getting an order to build a house costs quite as much as building the house itself. Is that true?
