Amarillo's only regional shopping mall will undergo renovations beginning on May 14. The improvements will include new flooring, soft seating areas, a children's play area, and the addition of a few new stores. Several new retailers, including New York & Company, Charlotte Russe, and Select Comfort will open this summer. According to Westgate officials, the renovations are expected to be completed by September.

I guess I'd be more impressed...if we were getting some new big stores.
Guess all Amarillo can get are the small ones.
Since K-Mart left town...we need a 3rd big national retailer to move in...and give us more shopping choices than just Wal-Mart and Target.

Charlotte Russe is a teenage girl/young lady clothing store.

Right after I asked about Charlotte Russe, I was in a mall in Dallas, and I saw it! I was disappointed to find out it was another teeny-bopper place ... oh well.

Guh... it will be horrible. I have hated Westgate for years, especially since the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory closed, and when they remodelled the center of the mall. There used to be two book stores and two video game stores that did not suck, now there are zero book stores and one tiny video game store that sells only one magazine. New flooring probably means that it'll be blinding. And what the hell, do we really need another teeny bopper store? Why don't they open yet another athletic shoe palace, while they're at it?
Nothing is ever an improvement, here. Amarillo's motto is, "If it ain't broke, break it!"

I guess I don't know what other "national retailer" you would be talking about. Wal-Mart & Target are really the only two big ones left. There are a few K-Marts left out there, but not many.
For as old as Westgate is, I think it's held up remarkably well. It's good when owners of malls are willing to put money back into them to upgrade the facility. The better condition the mall is in, the more likely people will keep coming to spend money and then tenants will stay.

The better condition the mall is in, the more likely people will keep coming to spend money and then tenants will stay. I have often wondered if time has passed the big shopping malls by. I read or saw somewhere that there hasn't been a new mall built in America since the 1980's, which to me seem like that was the heigth of their popularity. I am in my 50's so the whole notion of shopping isn't important to me, and I think Wal Mart has had a huge impact on retailing in general. So that there are signs of life in this one I say is a positive sign. Population is the cornerstone to everything in a consumer economy, so we have the retail outlets here that the population will support. If we had a Big XXII institution here like Lubbock does, then you would see a retail scene that caters to more upscale tastes.
