Let me preface this with the statement that Amarillo is my hometown, and I love it. I always will. But I know it's not perfect ... (and in fact would love to someday move to Florida or a Caribbean Island).
So, in your opinion, what does Amarillo need for the 30-50-something crowd, whether married or single, that's fun to do ... a fun hangout? Your answer needs to be something realistic (not sand, trees and a huge body of salt water).
I'm thinking a cafe/bar/grill that functions just like a community forum.
I mean, I posted when I was brand new to TA about imagining the site like a big cafe/coffee shop/bar where people came to hang out and discuss ... whatever ... kinda like on the forum.
So ... what do you think?

Would that be an after work hangout...like the Central Perk thing on Friends....or like the Cheers bar?

Amarillo needs another waterpark because the one we have now is not very good!

I'm definitely thinking about after work and even maybe weekend fun things. Not necessarily family things, although I know what you are saying, Tornado, but Amarillo is already extremely family oriented. I have no problem with those things at all.
So, more along the lines of WT's question.

comedy clubs- are there any here?
bar/hang out where open mike night exists. (Not the full on music band, but a small group/individual with a guitar or like instrument with an intimate type atmosphere)
A reading room/poetry hang out
independent bookstore that actively encourages local authors/writers to share their work and encourages patrons to hang around
I know that when I moved here I looked everywhere for a "new to Amarillo" type of group and couldn't find anything similar.
Although attractions like wax museums are family oriented, it gives us without kids something to do too! Along the same lines, the Ripley's believe it or not type attractions.
Horse racing
instead of a bar.. how bout a wine & cigar bar? (figure the wine would attract the 30-50 somethings and not the 20 somethings. I just started to like wine at 35.)
art/foreign film theater. the few that the mall gets isn't enough for me.
Dave and Buster's would be an attraction and a restaurant. They have pool table, card games, skee ball, video games and all the amusement type games. You get tickets (think Chuck E Cheese) to turn in for prizes. The food is pretty decent.

There is a horse track in Grand Prairie (been there many times), was this a recent event? I think the track has been open since like 1998ish.

Karenew, he has been trying for about 4 or 5 years. He had all the plans made up and I think had even broke ground on the property. But they said that gambling is not allowed in Texas. This is why we can't have casinos. Oklahoma and New Mexico are cahing in on their casinos. I know a llot of people that go to Oklahoma on weekends. I have not been yet. We have gone to Sandia in NM though. I think if you google Saddlebrooke Park in Amarillo you can find it. He may have some more information on it.

Not trying to be difficult but horse racing is legal in Texas. I have been to this race track many times. www.lonestarpark.com There are other horse tracks in Corpus, Austin, Fredricksburg, Selma, Houston and Harlingen. The only info that I could find on the racetrack in Amarillo is here www.arcimembers.com/PublicPages/2001web/news/2003/012103.pdfand that is from 2001. There has to be another reason for the park not being built. We frequently make the drive to Sandia, Cripple Creek and Windstar.

OK I looked it up on amarillo.com then searched his name. It shows where the license was delayed but then further down the page it shows where it was approved. I am not sure why he has not began to open it. Unless money is an issue. But if you go to saddlebrookpark.com you will find it and you can read more about it and him.

It was my understanding that he was wanting to be able to have casino (slots) gambling and the track, much like the NM tracks do.

no, I haven't been to Randelette. What is it? Perry tried to have slots added to horse tracks, but the measure/bill failed. Here are just a issues that he supported that failed. Casino Gambling: Would have created full-scale destination resort casinos in major cities and some coastal tourist spots. Race Track Slots: Would have allowed video slot machines, known as video lottery terminals, at horse and dog race tracks. Indian Gambling: Would have allowed limited casino gambling on the state's American Indian reservations. source www.thevictoriaadvocate.com/428/story/63956.html

Karenew, Let me first apologize to you, I just realized I misspelled your name in my last post. Anyway, Randelette is in Oklahoma and the have pretty good casinos there. They had started paying badly but there is another one being built not to far away so they have readjusted and are paying like they did when they first opened.
