On Rock 108...they are advertising a Chevelle concert for April 1st. The commercials tell how Chevelle is stronger than ever...and are a multi-platinum recording artist. Good so far...until the end of the commercial...where they finally get around to saying it's a wanna-be concert at Midnight Rodeo. Anyone else remember the real rock concerts from the mid-70's to the 80's at the Civic Center. Think how much better a Chevelle concert would be there...and not on the dinky Midnight Rodeo stage...with the pool tables on the left...and the restroom sign on the right...as you look at the stage. I'm sorry...but the Midnight Rodeo building has a LOW ceiling and poor visibility...and was built as a Gibson's Discount store...and still has 2 truck bays on the back...and is NOT a real concert venue. That old metal wall building...converted into a night club...is not a good place for concerts. I guess it's a sign of how 2nd rate Amarillo is becoming...compared to Lubbock...where they can get real concerts at United Spirit Arena. Especially with corporate salaried jobs leaving town...only to be replaced with low-paying hourly jobs at call centers and stores on Soncy. Amarillo has a low number of people with a 4-yr college degree...and a 4-yr university...that still hasn't been able to get it's student enrollment numbers back up to where it was in 1971. Guess if you don't like the Amarillo problems...one could take the quitter route...and leave town. Or one could stay in Amarillo...and do the smart thing by trying to get the problems fixed. Don't all know the solutions...but Amarillo sure needs some things fixed and improved...and is slipping behind.

While we do have some rock concerts here at the United Spirit Arena, many of them are at the Amphitheater. In addition, if it's gonna be an indoor concert and there's most likely gonna be a mosh pit, they usually have them at the coliseum at the South plains fair Grounds (Fair park Coliseum). Chevelle, by the way, does indeed rock.

I still think you get a much better sound in the concrete pit at the Civic Center...
And you have seats for those who want to sit...with an excellent view of everything...from up in the basketball arena seats.
I think the Civic Center would encourage much bigger crowds...for a group like Chevelle.
Not as good for the revenue of the private bar owners at Midnight Rodeo...but better for the town and the band.
There are no concerts any more at the Civic Center...which is really a shame for Amarillo.

It's all about money. It's cheaper for the promoters to have concerts at Midnight Rodeo, so that's where they have them. Also, the City of Amarillo and the Civic Center bunch don't appear to be interested in having rock concerts at the Civic Center and they don't aggressively pursue having them there.

The more I think about this...
The more I think we may have let some ass-backwards city leaders Bible-Belt rock concerts out of the Civic Center.
Based on some things we've seen in Amarillo and Lubbock over the years...
I think that's what may have happened years ago...where leaders tried to "protect" us from evil rock concerts.
They can't completely control the private night clubs...but they can control the public Civic Center facilities.
The conservative Amarillo city leaders and the night clubs now have time on their side...
Because it's been long enough...that the memories of the big real rock concerts at the Civic Center are now fading.
With some of the Amarillo leadership's attitudes...it's no wonder that Amarillo is only growing about 1 percent per year in population.
And down in Canyon...it's the same attitude that has kept WTAMU from growing significantly since 1971.
Also...they keep attendance at the little "concerts" at Midnight Rodeo small...by really only advertising them on just one radio station...Rock108.

I would have to agree with WT on this issue. The Midnight Ropaho is a terrible venue for concerts. I would also have to agree that there are some really ass-backwards people in positions of leadership in Amarillo. They haven't attracted many good concerts in Amarillo since the cops arrested the lead singer of Amarillo way back in the 80's on obscenity charges for dropping the f-bomb on stage. Hello, it was a ROCK concert. Besides, it's just a word that doesn't hurt anybody. Anyhow, that really made Amarillo look like a bunch of simple minded hicks and a lot of bands quit scheduling Amarillo as a result. I went and saw Metallica back there when I was in high school, but that was before the Black Album. In fact, I think it may have been before 'And Justice...'. Oh, Dee Snider, you set things in motion back in the day that are still trying to work themselves out now....

They used to have rock bands at the Civic Center in the '90s and early/mid '00s. What happened?

No, I know who they are, but Rock 108 is #3 here in Amarillo as a classic rock station. I say #3 classic rock station is because what they play. The first 2 are 95.7 and 100.3. Rock 108 claims they are on top of things, but they're not. Listen to stations close to Wichita Falls, Lubbock, Altus, OK, or Dallas. Rock 108 think they're the best new music out there, but they're 10 years behind. They suck. If it has to do with Cumulus, then they need to find another broadcaster. If not, then they should go off the air and quit disappointing everyone.

Who? Chevelle? I've never heard of them, I don't think. What do they sing? Oh, and YES, MR really stinks for rock concerts. On Rock 108...they are advertising a Chevelle concert for April 1st. I would like to see more Industry and good jobs come to Amarillo. I have never understood why we can't get "more" here. I guess I must be confused. To the best of my knowledge, Amarillo doesn't have a 4-yr university. In fact, I think Amarillo is the largest city in Texas that doesn't have a university. They should have made AC a 4-year university a long time ago. Now, I am afraid it is too late.

Petie...you are very confused...and sometimes not very bright...and have obviously not lived in Amarillo in many years...right? Amarillo has had a 4-yr university since 1910...but it's just not located in the Amarillo city limits. The 4 to 5 thousand Amarillo people who drive every weekday to class at WTAMU...know where their local university is. WTAMU has had a lack of growth problem since 1971... and they don't market themselves nearly as well as Amarillo College does... and WTAMU has not always gotten the proper recognition and support from some Amarillo leaders... But WTAMU is the local 4-yr university for the Amarillo area...and Petie's beloved CU is not. It would also be very interesting to see Petie try to talk about something that has happened in the last few days or hours in Amarillo.

It won't get better in Amarillo...until people are informed about what a medocre job the AEDC is doing. Les Simpson and the Amarillo Globe News kiss the ass of the Amarillo leadership...and will not tell people the truth about the AEDC. Since they brought Bell Helicopter here...years ago...the AEDC and Buzzhead David have only brought hourly-wage call centers to Amarillo. Simpson and the Globe News have covered up issues at the AEDC and staff unrest at Boys Ranch and FSS and lack of growth at WTAMU... And with the exception of FSS...no one has really stepped up to the plate to cover those issues we all know exist...but no one talks about.
