Back to the original subject of this thread...
I'm thinking that former Amarillo city manager John Ward might need to be kicked for Bible-Belting...
Because the concerts disappeared from the Civic Center during his tenure at City Hall...
And Ward...as city manager...was the ultimate one in charge of the Amarillo Civic Center.
But...the question would be...did Ward pull the puritanical act on his own...
Or was it at the request of the old rich fuddy-duddies in town...or at the request of one of Amarillo's mega-churches.
The rock concerts at the Civic Center were not a threat to anyone or anything in Amarillo...
And Midnight Rodeo is one of the lamest locations in town for a concert...with no raised seating for those who don't wish to stand the entire time.
Wonder if the RICH snooty Amarillo Symphony crowd would let rock concerts be held at their new place...across from the Civic Center. ;D

At least you still have a Midnight Rodeo.

At least you still have a Midnight Rodeo. Remember New West off the Brownfield Highway? One of my friends met her Tech grad hubby in that place in 1985...and they are still happily married with a couple of boys in school at Tech. If he can put up her neurotic mother for all these years...he's a LOT more tolerant than I am. ;D I was there that night with her older sister. Also...from that same time period...do you remember J. Pat's...or J. Patrick O'Malley's?

I do remember New West. I practically lived at J. Pat's in college. It's still there, but I haven't been in it in years.

Wonder if the RICH snooty Amarillo Symphony crowd would let rock concerts be held at their new place...across from the Civic Center. ;D I highly doubt it. I know...and it appears that our dumb city leaders may have decreed that rock concerts will not be held at public facilities in Amarillo. We still have an older generation in charge in Amarillo...who grew up without listening to rock and roll music. And we're of the generation who'd mostly rather watch paint peel off the walls...than get dressed in Sunday morning church clothes and sit through a symphony concert...with the old fuddy-duddies.

Update on this: Cool! I now hear by listening to the radio... That some rock concerts are now returning to their proper place at the Amarillo Civic Center. The city manager is in charge of the Civic Center... So all it took was getting rid of that old fuddy-duddy known as former city manager John Ward.

ZZ Top played at the CC in December. In looking at the CC schedule, there was 3 Doors Down on 2-11 and will be Avenged Sevenfold and Buckcherry on 4-09, both listed as being in the Coliseum. Do these not count as rock concerts?

Those are the new rock concerts I'm talking about.
We could never have any of those at the Civic Center as long as Ward was city manager.
Apparently Ward's replacement guy is not as big of a square as John was.
Amarillo went many years without a rock concert at the Civic Center.
