Brussels sprouts are in the cabbage family similar to cauliflowers and broccoli. They are easy to cook if you have a vegetable steamer. And very tasty with just a little butter and salt. I recommend using a vegetable steamer. If you don't have one , why not? They are inexpensive and simple to use.
To cook them take about 1 to 1 1/2 cups of Brussels sprouts and remove the outer leaves. cut off a slice of the base of the stalk and make an X in the bottom of the stalk with a paring knife. This insurers even cooking. Remove any more leaves which fall off. Put the steamer in the bottom of a sauce pan and add water to the sauce pan till it appears thought the steamer. Place Brussels sprouts in the vegetable steamer with the largest ones on the bottom. Add 1 Tbs of sliced onion and a sliced clove of garlic. Put on high heat till the water is boiling then reduce heat to medium and place a lid on the pan slightly askew . Be certain not to let the pan go dry by checking it ever so often and adding more water if needed. After 15 minutes of steaming remove from heat and place Brussels sprouts in a dish add butter or olive oil and salt to taste.

Try roasting them, they are awesome. Remove outer leaves, cut in 1/2 and toss with EVOO + S&P... put cut side down on a baking sheet (spray with cooking spray if not a non-stick) and cook at 450 or so until golden brown around the edges.
I also do the same thing for potatoes / carrots and lots of other vegetables.

What exactly would EVOO be?
Nevermind, as soon as I posted this I realized it's Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
