Kentucky St.: Several items in cooler at improper temperature; sausage and ribs on hot holding unit out of temperature; employees not washing hands; employee drinks not in designated area; drinks with no lid or straw; employees eating in kitchen areas; employees wiping hands on aprons; no labels on several items not easily identifiable; several dented cans; several vegetables molded; employee handling ready-to-eat foods with bare hands; some products in walk-in cooler not date marked; several bottles not labeled; employees wiping down tables without using sanitizer; no sanitizer in sanitizer buckets; ice scoop handle in ice; several chipped plates; microwave dirty; some racks used for storage of food items and utensils dirty; soda nozzle in bar dirty; pre-poured cups dirty; insulation in ice machine needs repairing; worn cutting board needs to be replaced. This is a failed inspection and a $50 reinspection fee is charged.

yep, me too! That USED to be our favorite place to go when we go to Amarillo. Weeelll, it will be a while before we go there again!

That place has been in a steady state of decline for a number of years now. They need to get their act together pretty quickly. Rudy's is expected to come to town as soon as they get the new shopping center up on the old Western Plaza site. Rudy's is very good and they will put Dyer's out of business if they don't pull it together.

this is not a surprise to me. Last time I went there, it was around Christmas last year. We tried to eat at Basil Doc's and they were packed, so we drove around and ended up at Dyer's. We were told at the front they were out of some things. We went in anyways, grabbed a table in the bar. After quite a while I went up to the bar to order drinks, get some menus. The lady handed me the menu's and warned me we might not get what we wanted. ( this was about 6:30 on a thursday night) We finally got a waiter, and went through about 5 choices - all of which they said they didn't have. We downed our drinks and went to Taco Villa. Talk about a waste of a babysitter!! I'll never go back... besides their BBQ sucks. ( just like everyone's around here) Thank god Rudy's is coming. Maybe some of the local "BBQ" joints will learn a thing or 2 from them.

Amarillo should be ashamed of itself. Any BBQ place where they boil (!) thier brisket should be ashamed, and that includes the lot of 'em (though I have no proof: don't sue the bdub). Someone please name me one good place to get brisket in town.
Were there ever any good BBQ joints in town? Any Desperados fans? or prior?

When I was a kid, I used to love to go to Doug's and get their BBQ brisket sandwiches. I haven't been there in years, but I have been underwhelmed with 'Henks' on Teckla. Maybe I'm just getting pickier in my old age.
Sadly enough, Amarillo has never had outstanding BBQ and Dyer's is probably the best option in town by default. When Sutphen's was open, there was a little competition between the 2 places. Now that Dyer's is the only show in town, they know they don't have to provide good service or food to stay in business. Places come and go, but nothing seems to stick. I think Rudy's will be different. They have had great success for a number of years now and they were a hill country institution long before they became a chain.
One of the problems, IMO, is that every BBQ joint here thinks that they need to place the emphasis on using beef ribs instead of pork ribs simply because this is the feeder cattle capital of North America. Beef ribs suck. They have little actual meat and the meat that is there is usually tough and chewy. For good ribs, you need to use pork. Also, I hate it when the restaurants pre-slice my ribs. I ordered a rack, so bring me a rack, not a pile of ribs on a plate. I like to tear them apart with my bare hands because it makes me feel like a man.

Doug's was OK when I was a kid. Now it is nothing more than a pile of mush slathered between 2 buns. I think it has gone downhill through the years for sure. Also, living in Austin, I enjoyed the world's greatest BBQ on many day trips to Llano, Lockhard, Manor, etc... not to mention the wonderful places inside the city limits. When I lived in Austin going to Rudy's was just a convenient little place to get some decent BBQ. But, compared to what we have to offer here, I think it will definitely be a beacon of hope for those of us looking for properly done BBQ. (whenever I'm not in the mood to do it myself)
You should give Beef Ribs a try again if you are in the right place. I had a great one not too long ago at Coopers in Llano. BTW, the best brisket i've ever tasted was at Cooper's... close second is Kreitz's Market in Lockhart. 2 totally different approaches... Unlike Kreitz's traditional german smokehouse approach, Cooper's is "cowboy" cooking at it's best. The brisket is not smoked, but BBQ'd directly over mesquite coals.

Even going back 15 years...I've always thought Dyer's was often skimping on the size of their food portions.
Remember years ago...under the original ownership...when some thought Cattle Call was a good BBQ place?
BTW...where is this Rudy's place supposed to be?

We almost always stop in Llano for Cooper's bbq when we go to Austin. Nothing in this area compares.

The worst thing about the Dyers thing is, when KAMR called the manager for their Food for Thought segment, he hung up on them. What a swell guy, and, may I say, a model leader for all his underling employees.
All he had to say was they have fixed the problems. Guess they haven't.

Does anyone like Ribs 'n More, that lil building on the median at 6th the Georgia? I ate there about a year ago. The quality seemed good, though it was a style I'm not used to. I've meant to go back. The inside is painted like Greece or something.
As for the Beef Rib topic: That County Line place (where Rosa's is now on I40) sure folded fast. I remember they had a monsterous slab of beef ribs, though I didn't try them. I believe they recycled the sign at the new Feldman's place in Canyon.
Musta, is County Line a Austin thang?

County Line is a chain. The one in Lubbock is only catering now. There is one on the Riverwalk in San Antonio. There's a State Line just outside of El Paso, in New Mexico near Sunland Park, that is the same chain. I ate there last week and it was really good.
