www.amarillo.com/stories/070707/new_7942465.shtmlThis is a HORRIBLE tragedy... But as horrible and sad as it is.... the sparkler was doing what sparklers do... it was sparking.... what killed the poor baby girl was the gasoline can in her hand. I have seen it time and time again....people leaving gas cans out and down where little ones can get them... this is dangerous on several levels. Gas should be stored away just like any other household chemical that kiddos don't need to get their hands on. Now that poor teenage girl/aunt is living with the THOUGHT that her sparkler killed a baby girl...and that is just not the case!! If I stored a gasoline can by my gas hot water heater and the house blows up because the water heater kicked on... is it the water heaters fault for coming on like it was designed to do? NO... it is my fault for putting a flammable product close to a flame. It is not right for this teenage girl to feel she had any responsibility in her nieces death... the baby should not have had access to the gas can.

Baybay, You're right, it is not the teenage girl's fault that the 2 yr. old caught on fire. It wasn't the sparkler's fault, or even the gas cans fault. No, the fault lays clearly on the shoulders of the adults that were in supervision at the 4th of July festivities. And then, the grandmother has the nerve to suggest banning sparklers?!!!! Don't blame the sparkler on your own stupidity, lady. It is her fault her granddaughter caught on fire, not the sparkler. Hey, I have an idea. Why don't we ban stupid people from having children? We can give them a standardized IQ test in the sixth grade and anybody that scores less than 100 will receive a free sterilization. That way, we could prevent stupid people from having children and causing these type of accidents. Think of the benefit to society by eliminating the stupid people from the gene pool. No, I'm not really in favor of sterilizing people with double digit IQ's, but I am concerned that it seems the stupid people in our society seem to reproduce at a much higher rate than the people who are intelligent. Back in the 90's, there was an indy group called Harvey Danger that had a song called "flagpole sitta". In it, there was a passage that went: "Been around the world and found that only stupid people are breeding the cretins cloning and feeding and I don't even own a TV." The song certainly comes to mind when I read stories like this. www.youtube.com/watch?v=djA2LsF9TXI

I have a fundamental issue with allowing a 2 year old to handle fire. I have an issue with the fact they took that time to move the gas can. WTF! Things that go boom or have open flames should ONLY be in hands of adults. This is a tragic loss that could have been avoided.
Wednesday we watched the fireworks at a field. I almost killed the couple that allowed their 3 year to have a sparkler that close to my 2 and 5 year old. Their kid who had this had a nice flammable Disney outfit on also. I let them know they were doen with that one as they were in violation of city code and to close to me. Bottomline, eliminate risks and some of this crap will not happen.

If this little burden didn't have a fireball on the end of a stick in her hand this would not have happened either. You people are a riot when it comes to giving empathy when it is unwarranted.
