"Fellow Buffs,
The past several months, West Texas A&M and McCormick Company have partnered to test various creative strategies as part of the University’s marketing efforts. We were looking for a theme that would:
enhance the reputation of the University,
speak to our new advising, tutoring, counseling, etc. initiatives that help students “find their way,”
have flexibility for promoting programs of excellence,
define what it means to be a WTAMU student and
be relevant inside and outside the top 26 counties of Texas.
As so often happens, the “thing” we were looking for was right here under our noses. BUFFS. It’s our mascot—strong, majestic, powerful, sacred. It’s a very positive word in the minds of today’s teens (our future students) as slang for a well-defined body. They are also familiar with its use as a term for someone with a particular passion, i.e. music buff, history buff, sports buff, etc. (Interestingly, the phrase “in the buff,” meaning sans clothing, never registered with them!)
The selected theme, “Discover the BUFF in You,” was embraced by all of our focus groups—prospective students, current faculty, staff and students, parents, alumni and community leaders.
You will see more of this theme as we roll out various recruitment publications and advertising and promotion materials.
In the weeks to come, we will also be sharing other branding elements with you. As we begin to reposition West Texas A&M from an institution that is “affordable and accessible” to a University regarded as a “strong, respected academic institution where people are treated as valuable members of a friendly, supportive community,” we will need your help. It will be more important than ever for us to speak with one voice and to show the world a unified and consistent look.
As part of the visual-identity process, we are making some minor changes to the University’s logos and symbols and revising our graphic standards. Please submit your designs and artwork to the Office of Communication and Marketing Services, 651-2121, for approval.
We will keep you informed and involved as we continue to make progress on this very important initiative.
Thank you,
J. Patrick O’Brien"
Kind of interesting to see what kind of changes will come about....
