When are the transfers going to be announced?
Are they waiting till the fall so that it won't look bad when half of them are no longer on the team?
How many ineligible players from last year will be back?

It's not a rumor. He's already here on campus. The full roster is up on WT's athletics site. It is chock full of new jc transfers and some d-1 transfers. Our defense is looking a little better now!

Maybe. The big name transfers have been coming in the past few years, but only a handful pan out into players.

Whether they turn out to be something big or not, you can't dispute the size that is on that roster! Go Buffs!

Because WT can't have winning seasons....without transfer players. Every winning season WT has had in the last 50 years or so...has been because of transfers and players from way out of this region. Think really hard about those big and fast linemen...because you can't find those guys in the Panhandle. You also can't find fast receivers around here...and have to get those guys from somewhere else. In D2....with partial scholarships...you can't count on freshmen staying around for 4 years...so you HAVE to get transfers. Unless you'd rather have 5-27 losing seasons....like we did with the previous dufus WT coach...then quit talking bad about the transfers!

Hey, I understand that it takes players outside of the Panhandle to get the "W". I think a good combination of the few guys we have around here with local talent along with those big, fast transfers can make a good team. I'm with you there!
I'm just glad that I started at WT the same time Carthel did!

I don't care where a player comes from....as long as he wins.
If my neighbor's kid tried to play at WT...and didn't win...then he would suck.

Just stating a fact - of all the transfers, only a handful turn out to be players. The same can be said about the HS kids, but they are not touted as highly. Whenever the Buffs get a "high-profile" transfer, he is usually oversold. Hunter Wall, Chris Smith, Andrew Alexander, Erik Mayes, and Brandon Johnson were all DI transfers. Exactly how much did they contribute? Meanwhile you act like local players cannot contribute. Tell that to Dalton Bell, Keith Null, Jared Brock, Charly Martin, etc. Can you win with all local kids? No, not unless you are located near Houston or Dallas. Can you win with all transfers? I guess we'll find out, but no one has as of yet. The top programs develop the bulk of the program from 4 year players, and fill in gaps with transfers. They do not try to do it the other way around.

Carthel is by no means recruiting only transfers. He came in here two (2) years ago and is trying to build a program from the ground up. He has to take transfers to fill in the holes. Also, it's kind of hard when a D1 player calls and says he wants to transfer to WT to say "No thanks" (unless he has been a problem SA at his other schools).
I think the following stats show what Carthel is doing: 2007 Roster ..D1 transfers......10 ..D2 transfers......3 ..D3 transfers......1 ..JC transfers......25 ....Sophs....1 ....Juniors..13 ....Seniors.11 Non-transfers (Only high school experience prior to WT) ..Freshmen..........42 ..RS Freshmen.....16 ..Sophomores......12 ..Juniors...............6 ..Seniors..............6
The Juniors and Seniors were here when Carthel got here. From the athletes who were freshmen last year, 38 are still here (16 RS Freshmen and 12 Sophomores).
West-Texan is right. At D2 it is really hard to retain athletes for 4 years. With the limited scholarships, it is pretty easy to say that all the work is not worth it for the benefits received.
I am convinced that Carthel is doing what it takes to build a long-term championship program. There are some really great athletes who are freshmen, RS freshmen & sophomores who will be able to take this program to a higher level. But, as I said, it is hard to keep all of them here for 4 years; consequently, it will probably always be necessary to fill in the holes with transfers.
