What's the deal with the contest for a new name? Are they going to be under new ownership? Basil Doc's originated in Denver, and stands as one of THE best pizzerias here in Amarillo. Their pizzas are just unreal. I'll be pissed if they're gone. It'll probably be renamed as "Mama Luigi's" or something (no offense to Luigi's Pizza).

That was a franchised place? If so...they may lose access to the company recipes and good ingredients... and it will be a wholesale change...like when Bourbon St downscaled to Cadillac Joe's. Going from franchised to local in Amarillo...is usually a decrease in quality. It's like if a local Sonic lost it's franchise...then they have to change the menu at the place. Most of Amarillo's local non-franchised pizza places...cheap out...and use too much tomato sauce...and not enough cheese and meat. They are still listed on the corporate website @ www.basildocspizzeria.com/html/location.htmlI do have to say that their location in Amarillo...is not very good...and that part of town is dead after about 6pm. They would have done much better by locating where they would get drive-by traffic at night...like on Soncy. Also...a neon sign would help to get better attention...than what they have. Everything in that little strip center area shuts down by at least 6pm...which is not good for a pizza place. People eat more pizza at night...and you need drive-by night traffic. They are in such a non-visible location...that I always forgot they were there. Pay attention to that...business owners!

What I'm saying is...
That they had the franchise fee to pay up front...regardless.
And then they got bit by a low traffic location.
Most people eat pizza at night...
But all the surrounding businesses were shut down at night...
And most people aren't going to drive 3 blocks off Georgia at night...
To see a restaurant of any sort...in the middle of a bunch of businesses that closed at 6pm.
Their location was bad enough...that I almost completely forgot they even existed.
They could have done a lot better...
by locating somewhere along Georgia or Western...south of I-40....
where people could drive by at night...and see them.
Low traffic location + franchise fee to pay = hard to make it as a business.

I'd think a perfect location for a franchised place like that...
Would be in that strip right off Georgia...just down from Starbucks.
A little bit higher on rent...but a LOT more traffic.

www.basildocspizzeria.com/index.htmLooking closer at their website...maybe they aren't franchised. It's just odd to have 5 Denver locations...and then the 1 in Amarillo. Almost like the Denver owners had family or a friend in Amarillo. You'd think they'd have expanded to some other Colorado locations...that are much larger markets than Amarillo. If they want to stay at that location here...they definitely need to upgrade to a back-lighted sign that can be read from a distance at night. Their sign...with the 2 small spotlights on the bottom...is very hard to read from more than about 150 feet away at night.

Maybe they're just trying to get a catchier name...
But still...they need a much better sign...that is back-lit.
Also...it seems to be pretty much a world standard that all pizza places...have the color red in their signs.

The Amarillo location does more business than the Denver locations. It is very busy at night.

Seems like Basil Doc's is always busy at night.

He *lived* in Denver, though, yes? I'm relieved that there hasn't been a change in ownership. Will the Denver locations still be called Basil Doc's? I'm still puzzled why the name is changing here. BTW, I love the location. I think anyone who thinks it's "out of the way" is a little bit dense. So it's not on a main street with a huge billboard sign -- who cares? Anyone with a phone book (and a brain) can find out about it, and locate it.

Yes, graduated college in Colorado, he also lived in Indiana, but grew up in Amarillo and graduated High School from Tascosa.
I think so.
The two restaurant styles are different, for example one's dine in while the others are all take out. They are just different concepts. Even recipes and pizzas are different between the two, for example Amarillo has tried to get more fresh ingredients while the Denver stores opt for powdered mixes.

changing names is never a good thing, as you can see here it has caused lots of confusion, speculation, etc. But, the bottom line is that basil doc's does a ROCKING business and in fact needs more space if anything. Business is so good that " take out" orders can take as long as 2+ hours, as they do not have the kitchen capacity to serve all of the demand. ( tables are the priority, obviously) This is the best pizza by far in Amarillo and is so good that people would drive to Claude for it. So being off Georgia / I-40 by a few blocks doesn't make a d**n bit of difference. As others have pointed out the owner is an Amarillo native who lived in Denver, where he became affiliated with Basil Doc's. I'm assuming that he has decided to unaffiliate himself so that he has more freedom with the menu and won't have to pay any type of royalties. This is the only "artisan" quality pizza in town and I don't expect that to change with the name change. it's not like they are ordering mixes from corporate. the stuff is made from scratch on the premises.
