Does anyone know why the name was changed from Henk's to Hank's? I swear I'm not crazy and it was Henk's up until recently.
Also, Doug's BBQ's name changed to Henk's/Hank's a little while back, but a few weeks ago, I noticed it was back to Doug's again. What the heck?

I also noticed the name change...and assumed the place had changed ownership...
And that they were trying to change the name...but keep it close enough...that hopefully no one would notice.
Years ago...that J.Riggins men's clothing store at Westgate Mall changed the name to J.Riggings for the exact same reason.
Back in the late 80's...I know a guy who sold his small business here in town...and he and his wife had to get a lawyer...and threaten to sue...to get the new owners to take his name off the sign.

That would be pretty bizarre. Maybe the spelling was changed to how the name is actually pronounced? That'd be pretty weird, too.

Sometimes a local business will run into trademark issues with their name. And it may be some time before the trademark owner finally finds out that someone is using a name that is close to the trademarked name. I grew up in one of the small towns here in the Panhandle... And while I was off going to college at WTSU... Some women opened a gift shop type store with a name that was a slight variation of the name of a famous New York department store. 2 or 3 years later...they got a letter from the famous store's law firm... Telling them they had to change their name...because it was very close. Being a small business...they had no choice but to change their store's name. Didn't hurt their business at all...and that successful small town gift store is still doing good business. Don't know if that is what affected this Amarillo restaurant...but it is a possibility.

Also...back in the early 90's...when Hooters first opened their restaurant in Amarillo...
What is now Hoots Pub on Hobbs...got into name trouble with the Hooters law firm.
Under the previous owners...that bar was called Hooters for a while...
In the early 90's...before the Hooters restaurant came to Amarillo.
When the restaurant came to Amarillo...they got onto the bar...for using a trademarked name.
On their big sign...the bar first tried Whooters...
and they tried names like Whootrs...and then finally were allowed to keep the name Hoots.
Anyone who was around at that time...may have noticed several name changes for that bar...in a just few months time.
Corporate lawyers are very good at enforcing trademarked names against a small business.

Doug Henk's has been around Amarillo for 50 years, though. I can't see any trademark problems.

There was church thrift shop in Bozeman, MT located on 5th avenue, so they got an idea to call the place "Sack's Fifth Avenue" because they packaged the customers purchases in brown paper bags. They got a letter from the lawyers for Saks Fifth Avenue in New York, ordering them to cease and desist with the usage of that name.

The wifey picked up some ribs from the Henks on Teckla. Big, nice rub, good overall flavor. I don't care for their sauce, but they're good without it. She got a killer looking BBQ Frito Pie that somehow was less that the sum of its parts. It looked great, but was very bland. Spiking it with some pickled japs made it OK.

I notice the place on Teckla has changed the name yet again...to Crazy Larry's.
It appeared to be an ownership change when they changed from Henk's to Hank's.
So is this a new owner?
Or the same owner who bought the place from Henk?

I thought I saw on the sign a comment like "new name - same owners". I wonder how a local business far away from I-40 with a 50 year established reputation would be concerned about a chain competitor on I-40, but then I suppose thier trade would be mobile enough to go to Rudy's, but by and large, the local business usually gets by on its established base of local customers.
I had some Rudy's barbeque today ... it was so delicious, made even more so by the fact that someone else paid for it.

The sign out front says...NOW FRANCHISING. Maybe some out of town visitor to Amarillo will see it. Because I bet they don't want a franchisee competing with them IN Amarillo.
