Week Eight High School Football

Oh my, what demands this puts on me. Having to come in after midnight and put this together. Rena is a task master.

We have several games that mean a lot this week...some biggies.

What does everyone think? Here are mine....

Odessa - Sandies...The Sandstorm had an upset within reach last week but let it slip away. If the play as good as they did all but the last 4:00 minutes of last week they could win this week. Sandies by a whisker...(for those Coronado grads that means dyam close game.)

Tascosa - Midland...long road...long game....long loss for Tascosa.

Coronado - Permian...a four letter word...MOJO

Midland Lee - Monterey...a three letter word...Lee

Caprock - Randall...this could be one good game. I gotta pick the Raiders to rock the place.

Dumas - Pampa...Dumas has something Pampa doesn't...Wins...Demons get another one.

S.A. Lakeview - Hereford...Herd gets it done.

Frenship - Plainview...Frenship can name it...Plainview can lose it.

Borger - Perryton...what, Perryton has a home game? The Rangers will please the home crowd.

Levelland - Dalhart....battle of the wolves....I will take the Golden Wolf over the Lobo.

Lubbock Cooper - Estacado...Matadors handle Pirates.

Panhandle - Bushland...undefeated teams and probably decides the district championship. Bushland will go into the big school playoff bracket as district champion.

Spearman - River Road...a win by the Road keeps their playoff hopes alive. Hope survives eternal...Road wins.

Highland Park - Fritch...see above but substitute Fritch for Road.

Childress - Muleshoe...marguee game. ..probably another championship decider...I will be surprised if the Mules score half a hundred on Childress this week...won't be surprised if they win...I'll place my two-bits on the Mules.

West Texas - Sunray....the limited legions of Comanches (14 usually suit up on varsity) will give the Bobcats a battle but Coach Wood doesn't lose many at home. Sunray wins and continues march to playoffs.

Gruver - Stratford...best thing that can happen to Gruver is the bus breaks down and they don't make it to Bass Stadium.

Canadian - Booker...Booker couldn't have picked a worse time to play this Canadian team. It may give the UIL reason to consider the mercy rule for class 1A. Canadian will have their way.

Vega - Boys Ranch...the Ranch is having playoff thoughts...go RoughRiders.

White Deer - Naz....th' Naz.

Wheeler - Clarendon...game with playoff implications. I'm going with smash mouth Wheeler.

Quanah - Wellington...the Rockets tune up on the Indians while getting ready for Wheeler next week.

Bunch of games this week...what do you think? Do you have a game not listed?

SJ - made it over to see the Canadian game last week. Was suprised by the outcome, but still a heck of a game. I have not seen Canadian in over a year, but they really just never seemed to get in sinc to me. Pity poor Booker this week - you know Canadian is po`d and looking for a whipping post to take out their frustration on and then in walks Booker. ouch......

Odessa - Sandies... I like the way you think SJ. Felt all along the AHS was better than they have shown, they just cant put a whole game together. They are plenty capable of taking this game. AHS

sj, any pics on the 6 man teams?

Rena, I tend to leave football games that have higher scores than some basketball games alone. However, the six-man games I have attended are very exciting and I like watching. A couple of good athletes can make a six-man team very good. I would think matchups as in basketball could play an important part as well.

This is another one that is going to get ugly.

I didn't get to see this game but had saw Canadian earlier in the year and was impressed with their receivers and not so much with their QB. He threw to a spot most of the time and the receivers went out and found it.

In visiting with those attending the game, Stratford apparently manned up nose to nose with the Canadian receivers. The D-backs first priority was to see if he could knock the receiver down on the line of scrimmage. This apparently upset the pass timing Canadian had for the ball being thrown to a spot and the receiver being there. Like you say, it put them out of sync. I was told Eddie only rushed three, the rest dropped back.

Coach Metcalf is one of the best. I was really curious how he would approach the game. I hope both teams get to play for the state title in their respective divisions.

Well I really stunk it up this week.

I was not impressed with Bushland when I saw the highlights game earlier this year (Spearman - I think) and didnt know Panhandle had some injuries that they had. That was my upset pick that didnt pan out.

I follow AHS fairly close because of some friends grandson plays there. Seen a few of their tapes. I really expected more out of them too. 2 different levels of the game between the panhandle and west texas.

I was impresed with the way Pampa stepped it up even tho they came up short.
I expected much worse. Saw Dumas play a game earlier this year and thier QB could not miss in that game. Last night he couldnt miss the green shirts. Underthrew the ball nearly every time. Hats off to Pampa #33 with 3 INTs and #1 had a couple. Think we had 7 or 8 intercepts.
I still dont like the way we play pass defense, but it didnt show itself last night.

What got into PD?
Or was it Canyon?

Taking 4 teams to the playoffs is a joke in a 6 team district like this.
There is a good chance (with tie breaker) that you will have a team with 1 district win going to the playoffs. 3-4A is a weak district - 4 teams to the playoffs is just wrong.
I am sure there are more districts the same way.

With 2 games to go Dumas and Randall are in.
Then you have Caprock, Canyon, and PD all with 1 district win.
Any of those win out and they are in.
Then you will have a good chance to have to go to a tie breaker between 2 teams that finish district with 1 win to see who goes to playoffs.

What is the meaning of playoffs?
Did I miss something?

I wasn't too shiney myself banneddad.

I'm with you on the 4 teams in the playoffs. If PD wins out they go with 7 losses.

I just notice an oddity in District 1-2A. It depends on whether River Road or Fritch wins 3rd place how the playoff brackets are filled. This will the last game of the season.

If River Road gets 3rd, they go as big school representative and Bushland and Panhandle will be small school.

If Fritch gets 3rd, Bushland will be big school with Panhandle first runner-up and Fritch small school.

Panhandle will find it hard to plan for the bi-district game because if the Road wins, the Panthers will probably play Childress. If Fritch wins, the Panthers will most likey play Friona with Fritch drawing Childress.

Bushland, if the Road wins will be small school and probably play Friona. IF Fritch wins, the Falcons are big school and will get to meet the Muleshoe Mules.
