Again the UIL folks begin counting with zero for the first week of high school football. Only the folks that bring you TAKS could figure that out.
Hokay, we have a big rivalry game, at least three, maybe four benchmark establishing games to begin the season. Let's start with 5A
AHS - Randall...The Battle of Bell...the Raiders of Randall are coming in with a new coach and new system and the Sandies are plugging in players to an established system. This could be a good one but I lean to the Sandstorm to ring Randall's bell.
Plainview - Monterey...The Plainsmen have a new head coach I have had the privilege to know for quite some time. A former Perryton Ranger and W.T. Buffalo, Tod Pearson takes of the helm for Monterey. I think Coach Pearson will start in fine fashion with win for Monterey.
Tascosa - Palo Duro...The Dons should be one of the better teams in the area....However, the Rebels of Tascosa better be two touchdowns better if they want to make a showin' when they start tough district play next week. Tascosa with a ya better get it in gear win.
Lubbock - Frenship....Frenship ranked 11 in state, Lubbock located on 19th in Lubbock....Frenship can name the numbers.
E.P. Franklin - Coronado...The El Paso teams are becoming more competitive but I'm going with the Mustangs of Coronado.
Canyon - Andrews...The Eagles travel south and peck the Mustangs.
Borger - Pampa...Big rivalry in the opener...new coaches for both teams...gotta go with Coach Parker and the Harvesters to have a little too much for the Borger Bulldogs.
Perryton - Dumas...The ding-dong daddies do it. The Demons send the Rangers home with the L and keep the W for themselves.
Hereford - Estacado...Bring a sandwich and a R.C. Cola to this one it may last a while. Total points scored could be over 70. The ball will see more air time for about three hours than Southwest Airlines. Hereford scores on a long pass with less than a minute left to win.
Lubbock Cooper - Bushland...Benchmark game...we see how good each team is going to be. I take my bench and mark Bushland on it.
Levelland - Muleshoe...Bad schedule for Levelland. A lot of Mules will see the field. Mules kick Lobos.
Dalhart - Sanford-Fritch...Well I guess they each have to play somebody...Dalhart does it.
Panhandle - West Texas High...A real none thriller. Probably only the parents care. I will go with Panhandle...don't know why.
Highland Park - White Deer...Gonna lean toward the Bucks in this one. Highland Park is going to have to show they have something.
River Road - Canadian...Another benchmark game. Is River Road really as good as some say? Has Canadian reloaded and is as good as some believe? I believe Canadian reloaded.
Stratford - Childress...A semi-benchmark game. Two storied football schools start the season off in neutral territory. Meeting in Amarillo, this should be one worth the price of admission. I'm going to go with Childress on this one but watch out for the Elks when playoffs begin...they shift gears.
Wellington - San Jacinto...The Skyrockets will get to play a lot of players. Wellington should have one of its better teams.
Sunray - Nazareth...Part of the doubleheader with Childress and Stratford at Dick Bivins. A barn burner last year, it could be the same this year. I look for Nazareth to burn Sunray's barn.
Claude - Clarendon...At least Claude has a short ride home after Clarendon gets through with them.
These are my thoughts for week zero. What's yours?
