Week six and the opening round of district play for most teams had a couple of important games that established some direction already in the playoff picture. Perryton, Dalhart, Stratford and Panhandle has important wins in district competition.
We have some more important match-ups this week while several other teams are cruising to their big show down later in the year. Here's the way I see Week 7.
Odessa - Monterey...Ohhhdessaaa is sitting on top of this huge 5A district with a perfect district record. Right now, I don't see anybody capable of knocking them off....especially Monterey. Just FedEx the W to the Broncos.
Coronado - Tascosa...The Rebels are still in it. I think Tascosa will beat the Mustangs to stay in.
Lubbock - Permian...The Westerners have been more competitive this year than I thought they would. They will give Mojo a game.....and the W. Mojo wins.
Amarillo High - Midland...The Sandies have been blowin' and goin'...but, it's going to be tough goin' and blowin' in Midland (White-collar oil) Texas. AHS and MHS are tied for second in the district with 4-1 records making this an important game. Coach Thiessen guides the Sandstorm through for the win.
Dumas - Caprock...Th' Rock....
Canyon - Pampa...Hope Pampa enjoyed their win over Randall last week. They won't see the W this week.
Randall - Palo Duro...Randall doesn't have two super backs like PD does. Randall maintains the perfect 0fer record. The Dons by two touches
Frenship - Hereford...This should be a dandy. I can find reason to pick either team. Both took it on the chin last week and each team needs a victory really bad to remain viable in the district race. I think I will go with the Tiger over the Whiteface.
Plainview - Big Spring....Th' Big Spring is wound tight....too tight for the Bulldogs. Big Spring Steers will get to play a lot of players in this one.
Levelland - Estacado...Los matadores se vencieron a los Lobos... which translated means Levelland will remain in the cellar of its district with a loss to Estacado.
Lubbock Cooper - Perryton...Cooper gets the same treatment Estacado got last week in Perryton. The Pirates join the Lobos in a last place tie with their loss. The Rangers move toward the playoffs.
Borger - Dalhart...Whoever wins this one will have a leg up on the playoff picture. Both are 1-0 in district and 4-2 for the season. Tough call... When in doubt go with the home team. Dalhart in a good ball game.
Spearman - Bushland...Bushland is at an all different level compared to the area's 2A teams. Just another tuneup for the Falcon's playoff run.
Highland Park - River Road...This one should be decided early. Too rough a Road for the Hornets. The Road stays a contender and the Hornets are now not even a pretender.
Panhandle - Sanford Fritch...The Panthers always have trouble with the Eagles in Fritch. This time won't be any exception but I think the Panthers gained alot of confidence last week that will carry them to a win.
Tulia - Muleshoe...Why bother? Mules cruise....
Childress - Floydada...neither Floyd nor Ada can do much about this one. Childress pours it on.
Friona - Dimmitt...The best thing Dimmitt can do is hope basketball season arrives soon. Chiefs dominate.
Bovina - Boys Ranch...This probably depends how well Bovina can bounce back from the disappointing 42-43 loss to the Naz. On paper looks like a close game... but they will play it on grass. Th' Ranch duz it.
Vega - Naz...Naz found that other gear...the one that takes you to the playoffs.
White Deer - Claude...When your a team is scoring an average of 3.33 points per game while the defense is holding opponents to 49 points a game it may be time to convert your football field to a rodeo arena. Hats off to the Mustangs for even showing up. Bucks stop here for W.
West Texas High - Booker...Indian battleground....Comanches and Kiowas go at it. The Comanches leave Booker's tepee with win.
Gruver - Sunray...Bad time to show up to play the Bobcats in Sunray. The Greyhounds just don't have enough to handle a mad, playoff minded Bobcat.
Quanah - Clarendon...Quanah gets another lesson as to why it is not going to the playoffs.
Wheeler - Memphis...Wheeler shows Memphis why it may be going to the playoffs.
Shamrock - Wellington...Wellington rockets past Irish.
Canadian - Stratford...The ground will shake and the stands will be full once again at Bass Stadium in Stratford. The game many have waited for for almost an entire year. Whoever wins this one will most likely be district champ. Last year both were state champs in their respective division and some feel that is possible again this year.
This will be one if not THE outstanding game in the area this week. I believe the Harris Poll will pick Stratford. The Amarillo Globe News writers will be split on their pick.
SJ is going on hiatus and not picking a winner on this one...
(hiatus is a two dollar word to sit on the fence not pick)
OK Phaz, hope I picked one of yours.... ;D
