This could easily be a reality with coporate sponsorships for the WT athletic department. Tech AD Coach Myers has put a lot of effort into lining up corporate sponsorships. And WTAMU can do the same. As WT stands at its centennial...this would be a smart and worthy goal. Even Lubbock and Tech know that WT needs to go back to D1. lubbockonline.com/stories/090609/spo_490259045.shtml

Appears that Tech is saying...
They'd rather be paying several hundred thousand $$$$ to their neighbor to go play at Lubbock.
Instead of paying that money to a way-off school like North Dakota.
I've heard that D1A schools will pay up to $850K to play a D1AA school.
For even part of that money...this would be a HUGE WIN-WIN for everyone involved.
Both WT and Tech and all the fans and alumni would benefit greatly.
WT seriously needs to step up its game...and answer this call.
Some people at Tech/Lubbock think it's time for WT to move onward and upward.
And I agree.
This would be a great way for both schools to start the season every year with a big rival game.

1957: WT was getting a yearly write-up in the Sports Illustrated football preview issue. And what is that? The Buffs beat Tech 34-14 the year before? Wow! And it looks like the Red Raiders would like to play WT again. ;D West Texas State was getting national publicity. sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1133143/4/index.htmTAGS: WTSU West Texas State University WTAMU West Texas A&M Texas Tech University Football FB D1 D1A Division 1 D1AA FBS FCS NCAA Canyon Lubbock Border Conference 1957 Sports Illustrated SI

As I recall, the players to watch, Charlie Sanders was from Gruver and Ron Mills was from White Deer.
Ron Mills went on to become a successful high school coach. He had particularly good luck at Bay City.

Was he coach when Bay City beat Corsicana?

Tech used to get a few players like that...such as Donny Anderson from Stinnett.
But the days of being able to build a winning college team from small town kids are long gone.
WT hasn't been able to win with freshman-only recruiting since about the time of this old article.
But WT can win at the next level if you take the silly recruiting restrictions off the coaches.
WT has seriously got to do something better than D2 and the boring LSC cross-over games.

Was he coach when Bay City beat Corsicana? I don't recall when Bay City beat Corsicana phaz. Coach Mills started his coaching career at Groom where he won a regional title. From there he guided Canyon to two district titles. Moving to Bay City in 1976, he won one state championship and was constantly in the playoffs. His record at Bay City was 104-45-2. He move to San Marcos in 1988, a 5A school as head coach and AD along with a considerable raise in pay ($47,000).

With WT at D1, a game vs Tech at Jones Stadium would generate extreme interest in Amarillo.
If WT were able to sell 20,000 tickets to the game at $50 apiece , that would be $1 million dollars.
Tech might not give WT that many tickets to sell, but it's certainly something to think about.
WT could probably sell 20K tickets to a game against Tech.
Playing in a big stadium close by would be a recruiting advantage for both players and fans.

I'd have to go to that game just to make sure you weren't being too rowdy!
