- Mike Leach = Joe Kerbel in 1971 and Bill Kelly in 1987.
Winning and popular coaches fired for false and trumped-up reasons...
At the request of old boosters with too much influence.
- Locked Adam in closet lie = Exceeded budget excuses at WT in 1971 and 1987.
- Gerald Myers and Kent Hance = WT administration in 1971 and 1987.
- Art Briles = Gene Mayfield in 1971 at WT - longtime high school type of coach.
- Ruffin McNeill = Don Davis at WT in 1982-1984
Good defensive assistant coaches and nice guys...but really not head coach material.
Many parallels between the WT and Texas Tech circumstances. WT number of students hit an all-time in 1971...right before Joe Kerbel was fired. Tech number of students hit an all-time high in 2009...right before Mike Leach was fired. Local media cover-ups all around. And people who had supported the fired coaches...suddenly changing stories to keep their jobs.

I think you hit the nail on the head, w-t. Winning coaches bring in money. Saving what Tech would be paying Coach Leach will not make up the losses the University will have. Of course, maybe Hance and Myers consider it worth it to come out on top in the ego game.

More strange parallels in the wrongful firings of coaches: - Mike Leach at Tech...and Bill Kelly at WT in 1987...are both lawyers who were coaching.
- And both guys are Mormon by religion.
Bill went to being a lawyer full-time...and he still lives in Canyon. But Mike will probably go back to coaching.
