I notice they have started converting the Fisk Building into a new hotel.
The people who support this have obviously never been down to Polk St after dark.
Nothing left around Polk but offices and a furniture store and some small restaurants and bars.
And the block that the Fisk Building is on...is the bar block.
Nothing is open downtown at night...except the bars on Friday and Saturday nights.
When the bars are closed or you get off Polk Street...
Then downtown Amarillo is a dark and scary and dangerous place to be.
Transients wandering around after dark.
And very common on Friday and Saturday nights...
For 3 or 4 police cars to be parked in the middle of Polk with lights flashing.
And that is right across the street and on the next end of the block from the new hotel.

Fisk Building is at bottom left in pink with the Polk Street bars right across the street in blue. And the Amarillo Civic Center is at the top right corner in purple. For the 1/2 mile or so walking from the new 105 room hotel...there are traffic lights. But Taylor and Fillmore and Pierce and Buchanan are very busy 1-way streets to cross. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Fisk is a nice high-rise building that was a bank. But downtown is not an area of town that most people want to be in after dark. Especially with hotels on I-40 that are close to big stores and chain restaurants.

Fisk Building is a beautiful old bank and office building that looks really nice in the daylight.

Give it time w-t. Some cities have developed a rather nice downtown residential section.
I am hoping Amarillo can do the same.
