I saw this on the 10 pm news last night. The new housing construction out west is mostly existing people upgrading to new homes. And now Amarillo does not have enough loan qualified people to buy the homes left behind. I guess all those people making $12 to $15 an hour in the call centers can only afford apartments. And the population of Amarillo is growing very slowly at only 1.1 percent per year. www.amarillo.com/stories/040909/new_news1.shtmlThere has not been any really big new business come to Amarillo since Bell Helicopter back in 1999. And the AEDC often seems to be more of a roadblock to keep new big business out of Amarillo. Texas Tech employs 8,000 in Lubbock, so WTAMU needs to step up its game for the Amarillo area. Tech is the 12th largest employer in Texas, and Covenant Health is the 20th largest. And nothing in Amarillo even made the top 50 list for Texas. www.acinet.org/acinet/oview6.asp?stfips=48&level=state1It's time for something new and really big in Amarillo. Amarillo needs high-tech business...and not low tech call centers. Call center jobs are peanuts compared to Texas Tech jobs or new jobs at West Texas A&M. AEDC and Amarillo leaders and WT..are you listening?
