anybody know what that deep green vine is that grows at the foot of trees (where U have left it open to water) and will actually climb and strangle the branches? I have to keep that stuff pulled from around the new trees, pinion, or whatever U call the tree from New Mexico. They twine around the branches and strangle them. Creepy. LOL down here it's the custom I guess to not backfill your planting hole till the plant has been established for a yr . or so.

Yes it is bindweed as the farmers call it because of it's ability to bind up equipment. It's part of the family Ipomea and that includes Sweet Potato vine, Morning Glories, Moon flowers.

wow ! actually bind up machinery ? guess the only way to get rid of it is to hand pull it. Can't spray around the pinion trees or I'll kill 'em. I always wear gloves because I got poison ivy on the brain. LOL I'm not tangling with that devil weed !

Shark, I deal with this weed on a continuing basis. Several chemicals will affect it although it is extremely difficult to kill much less control. 2-4D will burn it back. Banvel is very effective in limiting its growth and controlling it. Both of these chemicals will effect all broad-leaf vegetation.
Roundup, the good stuff not Wal-d**n-Mart stuff, will probably be the most effective but must be carefully used and it will kill most everything around except the trees. Roundup is harmless to the user as it is designated a safe chemical.
When I am attacking bindweed on my cropland and do not have to worry about carry-over I like a mixture of 66% Roundup and 33% Banvel. This recipe is very effective as it really gets the plant's attention. Mix the chemicals with water as the carrier with water being 95% and the chemical mix 5% of the spraying solution. Let me know how it does.
